Green Wedges

Green Wedges suggested as an alternative to the Green Belt are a planning fallacy. Certainly the idea that towns and cities should have more green and natural areas is a good one, but proposing this is naive because everyone knows who lives in an urban area that any green spaces that exist have got bought up and developed within the last 10 years. Playing fields, back gardens, and the open commons have all come under the knife. Who ever dreamed up the idea of Green Wedges needs to have a rethink, because what the construction industry is saying is that we have eaten up all the green space in cities, so but what we really want now is the surrounding countryside. With regard to the local scene In Glossop there is a universal agreement that there is too much housing, that the quotas have been exceeded, and we need a moratorium. Try telling that to the Town Hall Planners, we suspect they have other ideas.

It must be seen that the Green Belt is the last remaining barrier to natural wipeout and must remain sacrosanct. Distinctions between valuable and less valuable "green belt" are not relevant, as once the principle is diminished you have developers driving through the slightest gap in the legislation. Developers are already flouting the planning rules, with retrospective applications and trading without permission. Relax the rules further and they have a carte blanche to eat up what remains. The Green Belt principle is sacrosanct and forces planners and politicians to form a balanced view of human needs that can preserve the eco system.
